Girl Child Education Initiative
2019 Back to School Uniform Drive
Kaima Designs is proud to partner with Great Dreamers' Haven Foundation (GDHF), Nigeria to fulfil its 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility in Africa. GDHF selects and distributes school uniforms and educational materials to eligible institutions. Our goal is to provide 500 school uniforms to children who reside and attend school in priority neighborhoods. One of such schools is Destiny Nursery and Primary School, Ajegunle, Lagos State, Nigeria. This is a tuition-free institution established by Dreams from the Slum, a non-profit organization committed to providing free and quality education to underserved children.
2018 Back to School Uniform Drive
Overcoming Barriers to Education, One Uniform at a Time
For many families across the world, the month of September is often welcomed with mixed feelings. Most kids from comfortable homes are excited about the prospect of going back to school with new uniforms (or school clothes) and school supplies. However, for the underserved children and their families in Africa, a new school year ushers in another nightmarish period characterized by endless ridicules from their peers as they strive to replace their worn-out uniforms by undertaking odd jobs and hawking items on the streets in the bid to assist their parents make ends meet.
In Nigeria as in many other African countries, public school education is free through the Universal Basic Education program of the government. Nonetheless, other mandatory associated fees and the cost of school supplies take its toll on poor pupils, prompting them to seek alternatives means of raising funds if they must remain in school.
Girls are more vulnerable because if they escape pedophiles and near-miss accidents on the streets and motor parks, it’s only a matter of time before they drop out and/or become child brides.
In an effort to guard against these inhumane circumstances around the girl child, Kaima Designs initiated an annual school uniform drive to benefit female pupils in African public schools.
Our first outreach project was at Durumi Primary School, LEA Abuja, Nigeria. Through the generous support of Kaima Designs clients, friends and associates, 100 beneficiaries of the initiative were presented with brand new school uniforms, pairs of stockings and sandals during a one-day seminar tagged ‘Overcoming Barriers to Education, One Uniform at a Time’ on September 26, 2018. The seminar was organized by Daniel Stephen Child Foundation as part of its mentorship program for school-age children.
Kaima Designs team sincerely thanks all donors for putting smiles on the faces of these pupils. As a result of your generosity and kindness, these children will be off the streets this academic session and consequently, spend more time in school. The girls were extremely excited to commence the 2018/2019 academic year with great enthusiasm and peace of mind as they look towards the future with great expectations.
